Every community page now opens with the community's own description, its size and its founding date, read from Reddit and refreshed every few days. Search Console said the one question those pages win is "what is r/X?", so the page answers it first: in its title, its first paragraph and its first FAQ.
The community pages ranked for one kind of query, "what is r/Something", and answered it nowhere: they went straight to the growth curves. Now the description the moderators wrote is the lede, the snippet Google shows and the first question in the FAQ, with subscribers, active users and the year the community was created next to it.
The same descriptions will feed the API's communities endpoint next, so an agent can say what a community is for before suggesting it.
