What is Semrush?

Semrush is an all-in-one SEO and digital-marketing suite: keyword research, competitor analysis, rank tracking, site audits, plus content and (via add-ons) social tools. It is a powerhouse for search marketing and is sometimes compared to BuzzSumo for topic research. But its core is SEO and paid search, not discovering the viral posts trending across social networks, and the social features are add-ons rather than a real-time cross-network radar.

Pros
  • Enormous keyword and competitor database
  • Full SEO + content + PPC toolkit
  • Topic research and content templates
Cons
  • SEO-centric, social viral discovery is an add-on
  • No editorial board or team workflow for content
  • Add-ons push the price up fast

Pricing: from ~$139/mo

Semrush vs ViralHunt for a team of five

Semrush $139/mo 1 user $319/mo for five SEO plan plus 4 additional users from $45/mo each
ViralHunt $29/mo 1 user, 1 project (Creator). Studio is $99/mo for up to 4 users and 4 projects, no per-seat charge $99/mo for five And a free plan that never expires, so you can check before you pay.

When Semrush is the better buy

This page exists to sell ViralHunt, so it is worth saying first where we are not the answer. Semrush is the better buy if your job is seo and sem teams doing keyword, competitor and content research. Specifically:

Nothing below argues with that. If that is what you need, buy Semrush and skip the rest of this page.

Semrush is an SEO platform with social bolted on

Semrush is one of the largest keyword and competitor databases in existence, with a full SEO, content and PPC toolkit around it, from about $139/mo. Its social features are real but they are an add-on to that platform rather than the reason it exists, and the add-ons are also where the price climbs quickly.

People end up on a page like this one for two reasons: the bill after add-ons, and the discovery that the social side answers questions about your own accounts rather than about what is working across networks.

What the add-on model does to the price

The entry plan covers one user. Additional users start around $45/mo each, so five people is roughly $319/mo, and that is before the social, local or agency add-ons that most teams end up attaching.

That is not hidden pricing, it is modular pricing, and it behaves the way modular pricing always does: the quote you remember and the invoice you pay are different documents.

Keyword research and viral discovery are different questions

Semrush answers what people search for. That is a question about intent, measured in monthly volume, and it is the right foundation for SEO. It moves slowly by design, because search volume is a trailing indicator.

Viral discovery is the opposite: what is spiking right now on a network, measured in engagement over hours. A post can pull four million likes on TikTok without generating a single search query, and it will never appear in a keyword tool.

ViralHunt measures that second thing across eleven networks, 2.7 million posts and counting, and hands what it finds to an editorial board. It is not an SEO tool and does not replace one.

Keep Semrush if search is the channel

Rank tracking, keyword gaps, backlink data, site audits and PPC research have no equivalent here. If your growth comes from Google, Semrush is a serious tool and nothing on this page is an argument against it.

What we would question is paying for social add-ons on top of it and expecting cross-network discovery. That is a different product, and ours is $99/mo for a team of up to four (Studio), or $29/mo for one person (Creator) with a free plan that does not expire.

How we checked this

Most comparison pages are written from marketing copy. This one is not.

What we did not check, and why

And one that cost us: for months this table said Ahrefs starts at $129/mo. It starts at $29, and they also run a free tier. We were overstating a competitor's price by 4.4x, in the direction that flattered us. We found it while verifying and corrected it. If you spot another one, it is a mistake rather than a tactic.

The ViralHunt radar: posts from TikTok, Reddit, Instagram, X, Facebook and Pinterest in one table, ranked by the engagement each is pulling right now.
What Semrush does not show you: the individual post, on the network, ranked by the engagement it is pulling right now.
The ViralHunt editorial board: a kanban of cards, each one a post found on the radar and assigned to a named team member with a due date.
The editorial board. A post you find becomes a card assigned to a person, which is the step between noticing something and publishing it.

📡 Built for discovery
